Paper Money Notes Issued by Alsagoff

 

THE KUKUP CURRENCY


There were 4 types of paper currency issued by the Constantinople Estate namely TWO DOLLARS note, ONE DOLLAR note, FIFTY CENTS note and TWENTY- FIVE CENTS note. Details are as follow: (Click image for larger photo)

THE TWO-DOLLARS NOTE

Date of Issue:

1st May, 1878

Design Obverse:


A patterned border all round containing the value in English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil at the left, top, right and bottom. A five pointed star and crescent with the value "$2" in a square to either side of it. Below these the date 1st May 1878 and a serial number rubber stamped when issued. The name Kukup in Jawi script. In the centre the Jawi script when translated "With permission of His Highness the Maharajah of Johore" below it in English "Constantinople Estate". In Jawi script at the bottom when translated "For payment in cash on production by coolies" followed by the handwritten signatures and the sealed chop.

THE ONE-DOLLAR NOTE

1st May, 1878

Design Obverse:

A five pointed star and crescent with the value "$1" in a square to either side of it. Below these the date 1st May 1878 and a serial number rubber stamped when issued. The name Kukup in Jawi script. A five pointed star and crescent with the value "50 Cents" in a squre to either side of it. Below these the date 1st May 1878 and a serial number rubber stamped when issued. The name Kukup in Jawi script. In the centre the Jawi script when translated "With permission of His Highness the Maharajah of Johore" below it in English "Constantinople Estate". In Jawi script at the bottom when translated "For payment in cash on production by coolies" followed by the handwritten signatures and the sealed chop.

THE TWENTY-FIVE-CENTS NOTE

A five pointed star and crescent with the value "25 Cents" in a square to either side of it. Below these the date 1st May 1878 and a serial number rubber stamped when issued. The name Kukup in Jawi script. In the centre the Jawi script when translated "With permission of His Highness the Maharajah of Johore" below it in English "Constantinople Estate". In Jawi script at the bottom when translated "For payment in cash on production by coolies" followed by the handwritten signatures and the sealed chop.
